Today’s post compares the original “Lost my music” to the officially localized version.
The first translation is my own that I translated a few posts ago. It is a literal translation from the Japanese lyrics. The localized lyrics follow. I add some notes at the bottom.
Enjoy!
Japanese (Translated):
As I look up at the starry sky, I want my only light to tell me
Where you are right now, and who are you with?
When I think of those fun times, I get lonely
Going to the cinema alone, where we used to go together, and cry
My beloved is so far away
So far away that I want to cry
When I awaken tomorrow
Hey! A new hope might be born Good Night!
I still I still I love you!
I’m waiting waiting forever
I still I still I love you!
And I can’t stop! Hi!
On the brink of sleep, a dream makes me remember that One day
Your words felt a little fake
“I won’t ever leave” and “You’re my only one”
We held each other close,
But the promise was weak, fading easily in the dark night
My beloved, as long as it takes
I will search for you forever
Surely, when I wake up
I’ll find that illusive Morning I want
My beloved is so far away
So far away that I want to cry
When I awaken tomorrow
Hey! A new hope might be born Good Night!
My beloved, as long as it takes
I will search for you forever
Surely, when I wake up
I’ll find that illusive Morning I want
I still I still I love you!
I’m waiting waiting forever
I still I still I love you!
And I can’t stop!
I still I still I love you!
I’m waiting waiting forever
I still I still I love you!
We’ll meet again, right? Right!!
English (Localized):
Looking at the starry sky, I wish that you would be
That light shining upon me
How I wonder where you are right now
And if you are with somebody else
I think back on all the times – the times we used to share
It hurts so deep inside me
I am at the movie cinema by myself
I sit and cry alone
That someone I love right now is far away
So far away, my tears will not stop flowing
Tomorrow, I know there is still hope for me
So I lay myself to sleep and bid you good night
I still, I still, I love you
I’m waiting, waiting forever
I still, I still, I love you
And I’m never gonna stop
Hey!
In the middle of my sleep, a dream makes me relive
The memory of that one day
I recall our conversation
You were not totally honest with me
Even though you held me so, told me you won’t let go
I was your one and only
You along with all your promises
Disappear away into the night
I will search for you until the end of time
I will search for you for all of eternity
So I sleep and when I open up my eyes,
I just want to feel your presence in the morning
I lost, I lost, I lost you
You’re making, making my music
I lost, I lost, I lost you
Will we never meet again?
No!!
That someone I love right now is far away
So far away, my tears will not stop flowing
Tomorrow, I know there is still hope for me
So I lay myself to sleep and bid you good night
That someone I love right now is far away
So far away, my tears will not stop flowing
So I sleep and when I open up my eyes,
I just want to feel your presence in the morning
I still, I still, I love you
I’m waiting, waiting forever
I still, I still, I love you
And I’m never gonna stop
I still, I still, I love you
I’m waiting, waiting forever
I still, I still, I love you
And I will see you again
Yeah!!!

-A major note to keep in mind going forward is that the localization did an excellent job considering they not only had to get the feeling across –but they had to do it in the amount of syllables that fit with the Japanese lyrics of the song. It is certainly an amazing feat!
-The above considered, this is one of the better localized songs I have seen. Lyrically, the meaning is as close as it can be while matching the Japanese syllables, and so fitting the rhythm and singing of the original song too. Some of the odd word choices (such as “movie cinema,” which is rare to hear these days) is likely to fit that rhythm and keep the meaning as close as possible. You can see the meaning of both translations is the same!
