FE14 – Paralogue 6: The Herb of Wishes [Midoriko] Story Summary

–As part of a new translation mini-series, I’ll be summarizing the child paralogues in Fire Emblem: Fates as I go through Linkmastr’s video gallery of them (as they would take quite a while to get myself)–

This is Paralogue 6, and focuses on Midoriko. It is unlocked by S ranking Suzukaze/Kaze (referred to as Suzukaze from now on).

As usual, this is all done on my free time, and takes awhile. It can be a lot of work, but I do hope you enjoy! I am unemployed… so please consider donating if you like the work I do. : ) It certainly helps me keep going!

You can find data on the chapter itself here under “Paralogue 6” [P6] here.

Midoriko is gathering rare herbs in a bag for her father, aiming to make him happy and to hear his praise. She promises to be a good girl and meet at their designated meeting space outside the secluded region. Suddenly, she spots a man in trouble who is screaming for help as a thief attempts to rob him. Midoriko intervenes saying it is bad to bully the weak. The thief wonders who the brat is, and Midoriko tells him not to point such dangerous weapons at people, asking if his mother and father ever taught him such a basic principle. The thief scoffs her saying she has no right to teach him anything, and says naughty kids must be punished. Midoriko cowers, but then the thief is killed suddenly, and Suzukaze appears, saying he was worried for Midoriko as she did not appear at the appointed meeting place. Midoriko is thankful and happy to see her father, saying she was not afraid. Suzukaze calls her a strong girl, saying she’s already grown up, as Midoriko jokes she is now an older sister Midoriko wants to present the herbs she gathered that Suzukaze requested, but sees her bag full of the herbs are missing. Suzukaze assumes she may have dropped it somewhere, and says not to worry, but Midoriko insists she had it with her. She then realizes the bad men may have taken it, and tells her father to wait as she goes and gets it back. Suzukaze goes after her, telling her to wait, which she ignores.

Midoriko confronts a plump woman named Draj about her bag, but Draj questions if such an innocent woman like herself would do such a thing. She asks if Draj is an ally of the bad men from earlier, and Draj says she is not associated with those band of boors. Draj introduces herself as a treasure hunter from a line of prodigal hunters that seeks all things rare and valuable. She says the perfect thing for her is the “Divine Dragon Grass” which is found nowhere else in the world. Midoriko notices it is the ones she gathered, and demands them back, saying it is bad to steal. Draj argues it is part of the woods and so belongs to no one in particular, so she can take it. Midoriko calls her out on her frivolous argument, and so Draj decides to take her leave, saying if Midoriko wants them back so bad, she has to come get it. Midoriko says she won’t get away, and the battle begins.

After the battle, Midoriko is relieved to have gotten her herbs back. Suzukaze apologies, having made such an unreasonable request for Midoriko to do, but Midoriko says there is no issue. Midoriko says that Suzukaze may not know it, but some herbs have the power to grant wishes, but that these particular ones are not the herbs that do so, but that they granted her personal wish anyway, which was to be by her father’s side. Midoriko says she will look forward to the next time she can briefly step out into the world her father is in, and until then will wait in the secluded realm, as much as she hates waiting for such long amounts of time. Suzukaze apologizes for making her experience such dreadful feelings, and says he had not noticed before, as unforgiveable as it is. Suzukaze says he was aware how the secluded region’s time flows at a different pace to the regular world, and would visit Midoriko often, but didn’t realize that it felt like much longer to Midoriko herself due to the distortion. Midoriko is silent but her face shows she is close to breaking down, so Suzukaze offers for Midoriko to travel along with him from now on. Midoriko is grateful, and Suzukaze says he will speak to the others to arrange Midoriko to come along, as she displayed she has a strong spirit and would be a great asset to the others. Midoriko is thankful and incredibly happy, saying the herbs must be having an effect on her eyes. Suzukaze tells her to come along, and that he has quite a few things he wants to talk to her about, and Midoriko is happy to hear she will be able to talk to her father whenever she wants to.

  2. Just like Chrom could recruit any child unit in Awakening (regardless of whether he is their parent or not), can any character, apart from the child character’s fixed parent, recruit children characters in Fates?

    • Apparently not. I remember the few paralogues I did, Kamui could not recruit Soleil (I was her parent), and only Lazward could. So it seems to be only the determining parent this time around.

      • Ah I see. I would have hoped that at the very least, Kamui could also recruit child characters, since s/he is in the same position as Chrom was (relatively-speaking) in Awakening. Then again, unlike Chrom, Kamui can be the parent of any child character, so that would have probably necessitated a lot more recruit conversations (for each child, one where Kamui is not the parent of the child and one where s/he is) and I can imagine the developers not being so inclined to implement that sort of thing.

        • Yep! That’s what I was thinking, would have a lot more to add, so they figured if you S support a character you’re probably using them, I guess. xD

          • Yes, but given that the developers did not bother to make supports between non-fixed parents and children characters unique (as they are all generic with minor line changes to account for the non-fixed parent’s personality and verbal tics), I guess this sort of thing is par for the course.

            • Yes, that was a major disappointment last time, though an understandable one from the dev perspective, certainly a disappointing one for fans, especially for completionists:\

  3. These are so cute~ I also like how they acknowledge the issues/loneliness/whatever that the kids have from being raised in a secluded region. I was kind of nervous that they wouldn’t. (Also, thanks for translating these! You’re really good at it. I would donate if I had any money at the moment ^^;)

    • I didn’t do these paralogues when I went through the game, so I found Midoriko pretty adorable here too seeing her for the first time xD Thank you for the compliments : ) It is also interesting how different parents react to their kids too. So far Suzukaze has been the kindest, and Joker by far the meanest. xD

And do not worry about donations, while I appreciate them they are not a requirement or anything, but I really appreciate the thought and if you ever do feel the need, then will be grateful for you doing so!
