From the Making of Fire Emblem: 25 Years of Development Secrets book comes some concept art for Soren from Path of Radiance. There was not too much to translate, but one interesting thing to note is that he is named Leon instead. That name is later used in Fire Emblem Fates.
You can find much more from this book on the compilation post here.
As you can imagine, the process of doing all this (scanning, editing, translating in some cases, etc) took a lot of time, and I am unemployed… so if you like what I did, then…

The ever lovable Soren. However, his name seems to be リオン “Leon” here. Interesting. That name (as romanized here) is reused later on as one of the main characters of Fire Emblem: Fates. But! In it’s actual Japanese spelling, its the same name as Lyon from Sacred Stones! (リオン (Rion) as opposed to レオン (Reon) like the one in Fates). (Thanks for the correction, Amielleon)
However, it can also be ソオン (Soan) due to the handwriting which makes it hard to tell if that’s a リ (ri/li) or ソ (so) there. If that is the case, the name Soan (being one of Ashera’s three legendary heroes) may have come from Soren’s original name. Or perhaps they would have some connection? Regardless, that is not his final name in Japanese, which is セネリオ Senerio.
But, going by stroke order, it is more like Ri instead of So, so probably Leon. Which is still interesting trivia in itself!
Makes me wonder why they decided to change it to Soren…those last minute development changes I bet!!!
Always, always those! xD
