FE Fates Localization: Conquest. Ch 12: Peri/Pieri Intro Dialogue (Minor)

FEIFWallpaper

This post is part of a series of Fire Emblem Fates localization comparison posts! I discuss anything from major to minor changes here as I play through the game. Today I do a quick request that was to look into how Peri/Pieri introduces herself in Chapter 12 of Conquest. This is a quick post as it is very minor.

Please note that this post is purely informative and may share some opinion, but this does not mean the change is necessarily good or bad. A change is just a change that is being looked into, and you can be the judge of whether you like it or not!

It is all just for fun and curiosity for me. : )

Pieri

At the start of Chapter 12, Pieri/Peri appears with Lazward/Laslow to join the team. Laslow comes in saying he is to watch over Corrin, and Peri says the following in English:

I’m Peri! P for pulverize, E for eviscerate,R for ruin, and I for impale! Kee hee! Laslow and I are Lord Xander’s retainers. He’s really worried about you! That’s why he sent us to kill things on his behalf. Best job ever!

You can see why the reader (and myself) were interested in what she said originally, as the dialogue above is catered to what her name changed to (Peri as opposed to Pieri, and the fact it relies on English lettering).

Here is the same scene in Japanese:

ピエリは、ピエリっていうの!マークス様、Kamui様のこととっても心配してたのよ。でも任務で忙しくて来れないから、臣下のピエリ達が代わりに来たの!

Pieri is Pieri! Lord Marx worries about Lord Kamui a lot, y’know. But he’s caught up in some task and couldn’t be here. He sent retainers –like Pieri –in his place!

One difference is that Pieri refers to herself in the third person in the Japanese version (often applied to “childish” characters). There is no reference to any spelling or psychotic stabbing either, even though it is still part of her character in Japanese.

The localization team probably had room to work with for her intro, so included this character quirk to better introduce her character.

Below is a profile of hers from the Japanese main website I translated last year if you want a better idea of her personality in Japanese. The third-person reference, as far as I’ve seen, has been removed in English, but the rest of her quirks still remain.

I will continue to look into major/minor differences as I see them, and as requests come along!

What do you think about this slight change? It is really, really minor, but I do like to hear thoughts anyway.

  1. Something about the localization rubs me the wrong way despite it being consistent with the Japanese version this time around. English Peri feels dumb while Japanese Pieri feels ditzy.

(You also have a small typo in “localization team”.)

    • I see what you mean! One comes off as childish, the other perhaps less bright in trying to convey a more child-like nature, perhaps? Not that all children are “dumb,” but I feel like that may be why it comes off that way. That’s just a guess though.

Thank you for pointing that out. The worst typos are those that spell check can’t find because they become another word. xD So I appreciate it!

And, thank you for your thoughts on the matter. : )
