Notes:

• The literal Japanese was “Royal Blood” and “Dark Blood” for “Hoshido Noble” and “Nohr Noble” respectively, which are the original Japanese names for those classes.

FE Fates Localization: Endgame Character Dialogue Comparisons (ALL)

This is another post in my ongoing Fire Emblem Fates localization comparison posts! I discuss anything from major to minor changes here. This one was requested to me by a reader on twitter!

Today, I look at every character’s final lines during the Endgame chapters in both Birthright and Conquest. These lines are only said when said characters are brought on the final levels of the respective games.

Spoiler warning, of course! As it deals with events in the last chapter(s) of the game!

Please note that this post is purely informative and may share some opinion, but this does not mean the change is necessarily good or bad. A change is just a change that is being looked into, and you can be the judge of whether you like it or not!

It is all just for fun and curiosity for me. : )

Notes:

• In Japanese, the right panel is named ホラー (horaa) which can be read as horror. However, Yukimura also says “hora!” in the last panel (which roughly means “look!”) before showing off his (creepy) dolls. It’s possible the author was going for a soft pun, but I did not implement an English equivalent as it felt unnecessary.
• For those unaware or who have not played Fire Emblem: Awakening (or specifically, the “Invisible History DLC” for this game), the left comic is making references to how they came from Ylisse but that it’s a secret nobody is supposed to know about.

Notes:

• For those curious, the word on the right panel for “Funny” was “おもしろい <omoshiroi>” Beginners may learn it simply to mean “interesting,” but it bears a connotation for “strangely amusing” which is not necessarily positive, either. I had to reword some things differently as a result to get the joke across.
• The joke revolved around Beruka’s deadpan likely taking the word literally. She was originally conveying “They saw this picture and couldn’t make any sense of it, but thought it looked “interesting”” to which Kagerou took it to mean the “strange” meaning. So to do that with the word funny, Beruka delivers “they thought it looked hilarious” and that it was “Something funny” as a deadpan delivery to arrive at the same reaction for Kagero.
• In the left panel, “pickling-rice” refers to nukadoko, a type of rice bran used for pickling things, rather than the pickles themselves. This was the most straightforward way to convey it.
