Fire Emblem if/Fates: 4Koma KINGS Page 105 Translation

The latest of my daily scan/clean/translation of  Fire Emblem if (Fates): 4Koma Kings (ファイアーエムブレムif 4コマKINGS).

This is an individual post for Page 105. The compilation post that features all pages thus far is here!

I do not post the raw scans here, but you may email if you want them to compare translations! I do at least one page per day.

All scanning, editing, translating, and uploading is done on my free time and is rather time consuming. It is certainly a lot of work… so please consider donating if you like the work I do. Any amount (no matter how small) is much appreciated and helps me keep going on a daily basis. I hope you enjoy the end results of my work! (If the donate link doesn’t work, try the button on the side -> )

105translateNotes:

  • There seems to be a few people who are confused with the panel on the right’s punchline. It is not a reference lost completely in translation, as the joke exists within his English profile, which states, “the youngest old man” at the end of it.
  • What is lost in translation is why his English profile says that, where you can read an excellent post on several different blogs, this one for example among others.
  • Considering it existed in the English profile, I did not feel too much a need to make a note of it, as I assumed readers would think of what his profile said.

Shouzou Kaga Blog Post (6/11) Translation

Today I translated Fire Emblem series creator Shouzou Kaga’s blog post on his upcoming game Vestaria Saga. It stands out as a game being made on an SRPG Maker rather than a professional studio.

This message was mainly translated for serenesforest.net (who made a post on it here) and is on this blog for the record, too, as it addresses fans who wanted to assist in possible translations! (How wonderful would that be?)

Please keep your expectations in check (laughs)

I’ve received a lot of e-mails from all over, filled with encouragement. Thank you very much. (A lot of them included flattery, haha.)

Though there is a lot of hope for this project, it is far from an industrial-level product.

It’s pretty much just a toy made on a simple game-making tool, and nothing more. Even if you play and like it, it will never be at that level, unfortunately.

I guess you could also say it’s like making cotton candy. If a professional craftsman was to make cotton candy, it’s still not exactly something notable to sell, right?

That’s all this is. Nothing of great importance. Please do not keep high expectations for this project!

Even though preparing the game (documents, assets, etc.) is a cooperative effort from many different people, making the game itself is a one-man effort (because the game-making tool literally prevents us from working together on it). It’s just me, punching in keys on the keyboard one-by-one. It’s why it’s taken so long! (laughs)

I’ve received several offers from abroad, saying things like “I want to help with a translation!” At the moment, with the way the game is currently written, I cannot accept such offers. I haven’t had time to even look over the text yet. Please understand that it would also mean making separate text characters, and that I am not allowed to mod or change [the tool] in any way.

For more information on Vestaria Saga, head over to serenesforest.net, or view the video below!

Notes:

  • As you may have guessed, the left panel was slightly different in Japanese. It revolves around the joke of the word for “flower” and “nose” being said the same way in Japanese. Elise said “flower” (花 hana), then, realizing her mistake, fixed it by saying to Izana “My nose is held high!” (鼻が高い hana ga takai), which is a literal translation of an idiom that refers to being proud, so she is essentially saying “I’m quite proud of it!” “It” being her ability to calculate the total so quickly. She follows it up with “If I do say so myself” using boastful language (我ながら warenagara).
  • I went through many different possible ways to convey this joke. Flowers had to be kept as it was crucial that she kept her moonlighting as a flower vendor secret. So I cut her off at “flo” first, which could lead to the punchline at the end. I am well aware that the “flo” in flower and the word “flow” are said differently, meaning she would have said “flaaow” the first time, and “flouw” the second time. To compensate, while struggling to fix her mistake, she says “Um…I mean flow…” The reader can assume she meant the second pronunciation this time. It’s reinforced by Izana saying “Uh…flow?” Which then leads to the last part. Originally, Izana had said “Flower?” (asking for clarification) there, so the original content was not changed too much either.

Fire Emblem: Famitsu FE Series Reader Poll Translated (June 2015)

fire-emblem-lords

Last year (2015), Famitsu conducted a poll from June 11th through the 15th. In celebration of the 25th Anniversary for Fire Emblem, they polled readers on various questions about the series as a whole.

I translated the first two pages earlier on this post here. They are specifically about characters. These last two pages deal with favorite game, class, weapon, etc. A lot of fun insight from fans back in June 2015.

The raw scans are available upon request. I hope to apply these translations onto the page eventually (which is when I will provide them too)!

Note that this was conducted before Famitsu’s Fire Emblem Fates poll, which can be viewed here.

I purchased the Famitsu volume that included this poll with money received from your kind donations. : ) This is all done on my free time, and takes awhile. It can be a lot of work, but I do hope you enjoy! I am unemployed… so please consider donating by clicking on the “donate” button found on the right side of the page!

101translateNotes:

  • Felicia’s Japanese profile refers to her as the “Goddess of Destruction” (or, “most destructive goddess”). The English profile simply says “The most destructive.” I try to use localization info when applicable (such as how Beruka’s “Has the highest poison tolerance” being right from her profile), but since it was Odin speaking, I think it sounded more fitting for him to say the first one (which is indeed what he said in Japanese anyway). So it worked out nicely.

Fire Emblem: Famitsu Overall Favorite Character Poll Translated (June 2015)

fire-emblem-lords

Last year (2015), Famitsu conducted a poll from June 11th through the 15th. In celebration of the 25th Anniversary for Fire Emblem, they polled readers on various questions about the series as a whole.

UPDATE: Part 2 (page 3 and 4) are up! They deal with fans’ favorite games, class, etc. See it here!

There are four pages of results, two of which I translate today. The other two will be up later! Note for these translations I only translated the results and player opinions, as the rest was general information about the characters/games which fans would already know. All raw pages will be put up after I finish the last two pages! But some lower res scans of the first two pages can be found here and here.

This was conducted before their Fire Emblem Fates poll, which can be viewed here. I do not think Fates characters were included in this poll, as the game was near release.

I purchased the Famitsu volume that included this poll with money received from your kind donations. : ) This is all done on my free time, and takes awhile. It can be a lot of work, but I do hope you enjoy! I am unemployed… so please consider donating by clicking on the “donate” button found on the right side of the page!

100translateNotes:

  • The joke in Japanese revolved around two idioms. Both idioms relate to weather, and also contain the word “fox” (kitsune) within them.
  • The first is 狐日和 (kitsune biyuri) which literally translates to “fox weather,” and is used to refer to fickle weather that is unpredictable (like a fox).
  • The second (both the title and punchline) is 狐の嫁入り (kitsune no yomeiri) which literally translates to a “a fox’s wedding.” It is used to refer to sun showers. Kaden is about to remark that its called such, but then springs to hug Selkie not wanting her to go get wed!
  • To convey this joke best I could (as English lacks a fox/weather equivalent) without also having to explain or change the entire joke, I simply opted to show the reader that the Kitsune refer to the weather with these phrases, (with Kaden saying “we call this” or “we refer to it as”). Even if the reader speaks no Japanese, they would hopefully accept that this is what these strange Kitsune do! Conversely, that helps emphasize Keaton’s point in the end, too.

FE Fates Localization: Caeldori x Kiragi C Support Comparison (Strange)

FEIFWallpaper

This is another post in my ongoing Fire Emblem Fates localization comparison posts! I discuss anything from major to minor changes here. This one was requested to me by a reader on twitter!

Today, I look at Caeldori and Kiragi’s C support specifically. There was a slight (and strange) change I discovered when translating a 4koma strip that referenced the Japanese version here.

Please note that this post is purely informative and may share some opinion, but this does not mean the change is necessarily good or bad. A change is just a change that is being looked into, and you can be the judge of whether you like it or not!

It is all just for fun and curiosity for me. : )
