This post is part of my ongoing translations of the Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance Memorial Book: Tellius Recollection (Vol 1).
This post is of page 164-165, which features concept artwork of Horses, Pegasi, and Wyverns with some commentary. The commentary is translated both on the page and here on this post.
You can find every translation I’ve done on this book so far on the compilation post here!
As you can imagine, the process of doing all this (scanning, editing, translating, etc) takes a lot of time, and I am unemployed…so if you like what I did, then…
Please donate! It helps fund future projects!

Enjoy!

Horse & Wyvern
These are designs for Pegasi and Wyverns –both of which knights use to ride into battle upon. As they are often minor details in the games that one does not think much about, perhaps taking another look at them may reveal something new that one did not expect before.
[01] Horses for the mounted classes. The higher the class, the more ornaments are added onto them. [02] Pegasi that are used by the “Pegasus” based classes. They give off a more graceful impression when compared to the usual warhorse. [03] Illustrations of mounted characters. From left to right are: Makalov, Kieran, Oscar, and Astrid. [04] Wyverns that are used by the “Wyvern” based classes. They are also drawn in mounted postures. [05] Illustrations of the highest class of Wyvern-based class.
Notes:
- The “wyverns” are referred to as “mounted dragons” in Japanese. But it makes it harder to differentiate between the Goldoan dragons as a result. (This is complicated even more by Ashnard’s case…)

In many games, the mounted dragons are called 飛竜 meaning Flying Dragon, or Wyvern.
The class line itself is always called DragonKnight, and DragonLord.
I heard there’s a line where Heather says:
俺はヒース。 見てのとおり、竜騎士だ。 相棒の飛竜はハイペリオン、見た目は怖いが、いい奴なんだ
Basically using the term for Wyvern.
So the class is DragonKnight, but the mount is a Wyvern, because Wyverns are a kind of dragon.
Did you mean Heath? (I can see why it became Heather, but the lines written there and Hyperion and such make me thin otherwise)
Yes, I feel like the localization went with Wyvern for 飛竜 also as a way to reduce confusion with dragons that were, well, dragons. xD Where as in Japanese using katakana for Dragonlords and such was a lot easier to let the audience differentiate. The notes above mostly pertain to fans who may be unaware of this. : )
In FE3, and FE12, the Dragons that are used are mounts are called Wyverns, so the localization is surprisingly not as off as you’d think!
How funny that the two games that didn’t make it here use the terminology. xD
It is ironic!
A good way to remember it is each Dragon species in Archanea has both a Human given name, and their Dragon name.
The Common Red Dragons are called Fire Dragons by humans, and the Salamander tribe among Dragons.
So the flying/mount Dragons are Flying Dragons, or Wyverns.
Coincidentally the word Wyvern is also used in FE1, which also didn’t make here!
That’s pretty awesome trivia : ) Thanks for telling me!
I don’t know what you’d want or need it for, but I made a cleaned up version of the black armor wyvern rider (since it was the largest and least blurry)
idk maybe some people would like it
I’m not sure what use I’d have either, but I definitely like it! 😀
The people on the Fire emblem wiki sites would love it!
I’ll give credit to you.
Please do so! That would be awesome to feature that wonderful work. : )
L95, if you can email me the exact process you did to produce this quality picture, I may try to implement it on other viable pictures to help the community out when it comes to some other designs or future ones : )
