Super Mario Odyssey: Waluigi Outfit Description [JPN vs ENG]

Today’s post is a small one, and covers a reader request to look into the Waluigi cap from Super Mario Odyssey. It’s part of an ongoing series of comparison from the game both by request and personal curiosity.

Japanese Lit. Translation Official Localization
あべこべな L字マークがついた帽子

あべこべL字マークの帽子と 合わせたい衣装

A cap with an upside-down L on it.

An outfit to match the upside-down L-marked cap.

A cap with an upside-down L on it. It’s barely used!

This outfit makes you want to lurk in the shadows, waiting for a turn in the spotlight.

Like we saw previously with the Luigi and Wario outfits, the Japanese description is very matter-of-fact and describes it as it is.

The localization goes with the Japanese for the first/cap description, but takes a more liberal approach to poking fun at Waluigi’s character with the outfit description.

This is actually a trend one can observe with the rest of the outfits in the game. It may be because the localization wanted to avoid what may seem redundant in the original language. Above, you can see the Japanese description repeats a lot of the same words between both descriptions. The localization may have decided to take the chance to add colorful flair as they expressed the Japanese description via the cap, giving them room to play with the outfit description itself.

Some fans prefer the flair, others prefer the straightforward description. Which do you prefer?

That’s that!

I will continue to look at fun differences between the versions of sorts of games when I get time!
