Super Mario Odyssey: Snow Outfit Description [JPN vs ENG]

Today’s post is another smaller one and looks into the Snow Outfit in Super Mario Odyssey. It’s part of an ongoing series of comparison from the game both by request and personal curiosity to see what some of the more colorful descriptions were in Japanese.

A lot of patterns are repeated from previous posts, so I recommend reading them or else my commentary may seem a little short (as I’m attempting to avoid repeating myself every post).

Japanese Lit. Translation Official Localization
厳しい寒さをしっかり防ぐ 弱毛入りフード

厳しい寒さをしっかり防ぐ ダウンジャケット

A fuzzy hood that reliably protects from severe cold.

A down jacket that reliably protects from severe cold.

A down hood that keeps the cold from making you bitter.

After decades of ice levels, FINALLY a good, warm, jacket.

Like previous posts have shown, localization through this game ups the straightforward Japanese description with colorful flair.

The Japanese here you can actually see has the same descriptor for both pieces of the outfit, with “reliably protects from severe cold.”

The localization chose to address the original translation with just the hood description (“keeps the cold from making you bitter”), giving them room to make the stab at the series’ previous entries with Mario wearing the same outfit through the ice levels, and perhaps, something the player may have been thinking.

A silly little thing indeed!

That’s that!

I will continue to look at fun differences between the versions of sorts of games when I get time!
