7 Years of Kantopia

This blog has now been around for 7 years as of today. Can you believe it?

While I stopped doing my daily uploads awhile ago, I’m still enjoying every looking into trivial matters and comparisons as they come.

There are still some bigger projects I’m working on translating in the background (hint: more FE 4koma), so please look forward to those once they’re ready.

Thank you to everyone who reads and shares the super trivial articles from this blog! Here’s to 7 more years!

Fire Emblem: Blazing Blade Staff Interview [Highlights] (Nintendo Dream May 2003)

Today I translated a summary (or highlights) of a developer interview on Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade from Nintendo Dream’s May 2003 volume. I could not find this magazine despite my searches for the full interview, so settled on translating a Japanese user’s summary of highlights instead.

If anyone has this issue, I’d love to take a look at the interview in full, as highlights may miss some of the fun tidbits!

Enjoy!

Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade Staff Interview (N.O.M 58 – May 2003)

I translated an interview I came across from the Nintendo Online Magazine No. 58 (May 2003) that did not seem to be translated elsewhere as far as I saw…

It contains some fun tidbits for the first Fire Emblem game to come to the west (The Blazing Blade), and FE in general, so I encourage you all to read and share.

Enjoy!

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance Staff Interview [Highlights] (Nintendo Dream June 2005)

Today I translated a summary (or highlights) of a developer interview on Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance from Nintendo Dream’s June 6th volume (released May 21, 2005). I could not find this magazine despite my searches for the full interview, so settled on translating a Japanese user’s summary of highlights instead.

If anyone has this issue, I’d love to take a look at the interview in full, as highlights may miss some of the fun tidbits!

Enjoy!

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance Staff Interview (N.O.M 82 – May 2005)

April 20th marks the 15th anniversary of Path of Radiance!

In celebration, I translated an interview I came across from the Nintendo Online Magazine No. 82 (May 2005) that did not seem to be translated elsewhere as far as I saw…

It contains some fun tidbits for fans of Tellius and FE in general, so I encourage you all to read and share.

Enjoy!

FE6/7: Complete Character Poll Results and Comment Translations (2004)

Over the past several weeks (and months), I took a look at an old character poll conducted around 2003-2004 for the Elibe games (FE7 Blazing Blade and FE6 Binding Blade) for Japanese players. The results for the top 30 characters of each game were published online with Japanese player comments. The rest of the results (and some more comments) were published in the Character Book. As such, the data presented here is consolidated between the two sources.

While this poll was of course known to fans for a long time, the Japanese comments were never translated in full (for good reason, there were quite a few). As such the objective of this post (and project) is to serve as a resource in both presenting the poll data all in one place as well as giving English-speaking fans some insight on what Japanese fans thought of these characters those years ago. It’s become one of my objective to help bring the fandoms together in some way, so this is a part of that.

Lastly, for the sake of comparison, I include data from the Fire Emblem Heroes Choose Your Legends character poll conducted in 2017, just so one can see how 13 years (and a Western audience) made a difference to where the characters ranked. You can see how characters stacked from the Elibe games in a FE6/7 specific analysis I did before, too. The same data will be used throughout the post.

Altogether this was 49 pages of data on word that I translated on my free time during the last few weeks, so if you’re feeling generous consider donating to help support me continue to build an archive of Fire Emblem (and other) resources here on this blog! (I’ll do it anyway regardless of the donations, of course!)

Four Years of Kantopia!

Four years! Wow… I remember writing about the third year anniversary just…last year? Today I drew a new Lilina banner to celebrate:

This year was the first year that I didn’t do daily posts. I still managed to do weekend posting though, to which I’m happy, and, of course, when I had time, made sure to post in succession.

Accomplishments the last year include completion of the Tellius Recollection Volume 2: Radiant Dawn project! I’m very proud of how that turned out. The Shadows of Valentia 4Koma mini project was also a thing. The Valentia Accordion project is still underway, as is the ongoing Day in the Life of Heroes comics!

So there’s still quite a lot to get through. I gathered some nice books too, some Fire Emblem stuff that hasn’t been translated yet that I hope to get through when I get time! There were a few interviews here and there, as well as some more fun comparisons this year.

Speaking of comparisons, I finally got around to making a special page that lists all comparisons in one place. It serves as a neat hub. I wrote much more than I thought (especially about Fates!) WordPress has an inconvenient tag system on the right, so I hope this comes in handy for people who just want to read the comparisons and not dig through the rest.

I hope to add more special hub pages for things like interviews and trivia that was discovered in art books.

This post, by the way, is a little late too. It’s May 18th as of this writing, but the anniversary was actually April 3rd!

Thanks to all the readers who commented and shared my articles. It humbles me every time, and I really enjoy reading and replying to all your comments!

Here’s to the future!

Happy New Year! -2018-

Happy New Year!

Let’s welcome 2018. This post is a little late and is actually being written on January 9th as I was pretty busy around the New Year. I finally caught up on several weeks of missed posts, and hope to remain consistent once again from now on with weekend uploads.

Looking back at 2017, this site moved from the daily post to the weekend one due to finding full time work. I have a lot of material (such as 4komas) that I have gathered since then which may see me resume a daily schedule, but there are some changes that may be happening soon (looking for new work more relevant to my field) which may delay that slightly.

I’m very thankful that there are people who find the comparisons on this site worth reading, though, and others who like the comics and such that are posted here and there!

As always, please send any requests of things to look into when it comes to Japanese versus English. It brings me great joy to go on adventures with readers in search of trivia.

Let’s see how things look as this site reaches its fourth anniversary in April!

Mayu Watanabe’s Final Graduation Performance Tweet + Translation

For AKB48 fans, it’s the end of an era as one of their most renowned idols is finally leaving the group. I make this post simply because I actually got to witness her final appearance as I just happened to be in Akihabara on the evening of December 26th! We stood out in the cold for more than two hours to see her… no pictures were allowed though (but that didn’t stop many of the diehards or me from making sure we got proof…). It was hard to hear what she was saying over all the fans though!

That aside, she made a tweet about it that I thought may be nice to translate as there are some AKB fans who follow me, so here you go, for all the Mayu fans:

“The Graduation Performance at the AKB48 Theater. I’m really thankful for everything. I have experienced many different kinds of things through my 11 years [as a member], but throughout all that, this stage where it all began has remained the most important thing above all else. I hope the AKB48 Theater continues to be loved by many people. I have four days remaining as an official AKB48 member. I will enjoy myself to the very end!”

I don’t know much about AKB, but it was hard not to know her! So certainly a big thing regardless.

Daily Posts Resume & New Lilina Banner (Summer 2017)

This is just to post showing off a new banner for the website, and to announce continued posting through the summertime thanks to vacation (and hence more freetime)! Though it is mostly for twitter, I thought it would be fun to put around on this site too. I was happy with how the drawing came out! Lilina is a great mascot, I think.

Of course, I do not claim any ownership over her character! So please consider this fan art. : )

Daily posts should continue up until the end of August hopefully! A big thank you to anyone who is still around and looking forward to translation work!
