Fire Emblem if/Fates: 4Koma KINGS Page 105 Translation

The latest of my daily scan/clean/translation of  Fire Emblem if (Fates): 4Koma Kings (ファイアーエムブレムif 4コマKINGS).

This is an individual post for Page 105. The compilation post that features all pages thus far is here!

I do not post the raw scans here, but you may email if you want them to compare translations! I do at least one page per day.

All scanning, editing, translating, and uploading is done on my free time and is rather time consuming. It is certainly a lot of work… so please consider donating if you like the work I do. Any amount (no matter how small) is much appreciated and helps me keep going on a daily basis. I hope you enjoy the end results of my work! 105translateNotes:

  • There seems to be a few people who are confused with the panel on the right’s punchline. It is not a reference lost completely in translation, as the joke exists within his English profile, which states, “the youngest old man” at the end of it.
  • What is lost in translation is why his English profile says that, where you can read an excellent post on several different blogs, this one for example among others.
  • Considering it existed in the English profile, I did not feel too much a need to make a note of it, as I assumed readers would think of what his profile said.

100translateNotes:

  • The joke in Japanese revolved around two idioms. Both idioms relate to weather, and also contain the word “fox” (kitsune) within them.
  • The first is 狐日和 (kitsune biyuri) which literally translates to “fox weather,” and is used to refer to fickle weather that is unpredictable (like a fox).
  • The second (both the title and punchline) is 狐の嫁入り (kitsune no yomeiri) which literally translates to a “a fox’s wedding.” It is used to refer to sun showers. Kaden is about to remark that its called such, but then springs to hug Selkie not wanting her to go get wed!
  • To convey this joke best I could (as English lacks a fox/weather equivalent) without also having to explain or change the entire joke, I simply opted to show the reader that the Kitsune refer to the weather with these phrases, (with Kaden saying “we call this” or “we refer to it as”). Even if the reader speaks no Japanese, they would hopefully accept that this is what these strange Kitsune do! Conversely, that helps emphasize Keaton’s point in the end, too.

099translateNotes:

  • As mentioned on the page itself, the support in the right panel had Caeldori hounding Kiragi for not writing a “war situation report” (more accurately, a report a scout would make on enemy positions, etc). It was changed to her hounding him about “cleaning the latrine” in the English version. But, obviously, that would make no sense with this comic strip, so I felt the need to point that out to those who were wondering what the “report” even was in the first place.
  • You may read a separate post about that matter here.

Notes:

  • In Japanese, Keaton said お礼参りに来たぜ! which can mean “We’ve come to settle the score!” to which Kaden corrects him saying, 恩返しね (“repay a favor”). The joke carried well in English, as settle the score has more negative connotations (usually someone seeking revenge), which is why Corrin was nervously confused.
  • An alternative meaning is Keaton saying, “We’ve come on a pilgrimage to give thanks!” (the above line can mean that too), which Corrin would still be notably confused by, but the above flowed better in English.

  • For those curious, the left strip was titled “ひとっとび”, which means “one jump/throw [away].” This English idiom was appropriate for it.

095translateNotes:

  • Azama actually referred to Yama/Enma here (the king of the underworld who judges the dead, specifically the Buddhist version that is based on the Rigvedic deities and seen in Japanese mythology) but I figured “the demon king” was a good enough approximation without need for explanation. Though I was thinking of putting something more like “Hades” in there, it would be odd for a Hoshidan to say such (as that may fit “Nohr” more…), which is why I went with the more vague “demon king.”
  • [UPDATE]: I’m seeing many people making a Ganondorf joke now though, I had forgotten he had this title too. xD Please know that it was an unintentional reference, and that I was not “forcing” any references in there!

Here is a bonus picture of the Oboro’s “smile” panel cropped for those interested.

For those interested in how much thought went into such a mundane comic, please check the translation notes! The left comic (Singing Haiku) had to be adjusted slightly to best get the joke across.

093translateNotes:

  • The left comic was a tough one. I felt it could be better. Translating was straightforward, but the main joke would be literally lost in translation. The joke revolved around the fact that, in Japanese, the word for singing and song (歌/歌う) can also be used for classical poetry/reciting poetry.
  • With the above in mind, I tried a lot of different approaches to making it flow naturally, but in English the closest I could get was saying “to sing one’s praises” (often through poetry). But it sounded really awkward to say “I support my allies by singing one’s praises…” or “singing their praises.”
  • The other joke still comes through, however, in that Corrin was rather impressed with the mundane Haiku coming off as potentially “deep” song, when really he just misunderstood the sing vs poetry joke.
  • As a result, I included the brief Translator’s Note, but set out to avoid doing this too often when translating these comics. This one needed one, or else the entire comic would have to be changed.
  • For those interested, the first Haiku was more literally, “Yukimura scolds me/gets scolded when his glasses break”, with the “scolded” a pun on “big round eyes”. So I figured “big round eyes” and “burn into my soul” would combine the two ideas while still adhering to the 5-7-5 structure.
  • The second haiku about the loincloth is more accurate and just reworded slightly, but she is referring to laundry she forgot to hang up.
  • The title is actually “One-Haiku Poem” (or one-verse poem) if it were translated literally, but I changed it to “Singing Haiku” as a way to get the pun idea across better.
