XC2: What was the “really likes being high” joke like in Japanese? [JPN vs ENG]

Today’s post is on the shorter side!

I wanted to take a look at a small line of dialogue from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (pictured above) which I came across while playing through the game recently:

Topopo, I hear, really likes being high.
…Hey, stop smirking! High up off the
ground, is what I meant!

The joke revolves around the pun between high (location, opposite of low) and high (slang for being intoxicated by drugs, etc). So naturally this will awaken the most trivial of all trivial curiosities!

So what was this like in Japanese?

Short answer: As you may expect, the joke is actually purely an invention of the localization. There was no equivalent in Japanese.

Fire Emblem Awakening: Nintendo Dream First Year Anniversary Developer Interview (June 2013)

I spent the last two days translating an old and seemingly overlooked interview about Fire Emblem: Awakening. It was featured in the June 2013 issue of Nintendo Dream.

Note that in Japan, the game came out in April 2012. (It was released much later in the west in 2013).

A big thanks to VincentASM on serenesforest.net for sending me the scans and bringing it to my attention. Please link back if you use any part of the interview as I put a lot of time into it. The original scans of the interview are available only by request, as well as the Japanese transcript I (re)typed up.

As far as we saw, this interview had not been translated in full before!

Some fun things are addressed. Among them are in-house fighting over where FE should go as a series, how the DLC came about, how Maid outfits were almost in Awakening, and of course silliness regarding Tharja’s bikini mishap.

Fire Emblem Fates – Why is Selena the only one of the three who can actually die?

Luna

Today’s post is not exactly a localization comparison. Rather, it’s just a brief curiosity post in regards to something that remains in both versions of the game. Namely, why is Selena the only one of the three “expies” (from Awakening) who can actually die? [In Classic Mode].

There may be some minor spoilers to some DLC that is still unreleased in North America (as of this writing). There are also very minor spoilers for Conquest and Revelation.

Fire Emblem Fates: Marth amiibo Event Dialogue Comparison (JPN vs ENG)

marthamiiboeve

Back in August I translated Marth’s amiibo event in full. A few days ago, GameExplain released a video of all four “first encounter” dialogues in the English version of the game. I took a look at Lucina’s dialogue, and surprisingly, things changed! Then I looked at Robin’s, not as many differences, but a few. Yesterday, I looked at Ike, who only had a few small changes (and an error).

So! Today is the last of the four, being Marth. He changed quite a bit, from informal to formal among other things!

This is by no means a “they changed everything so don’t buy this game” post! This is just to show how things can sometimes change through localization and is a way to satiate curiosity.

Note, this is just the first encounter for now. If I find videos, or when the game comes out, I will be able to compare second encounters as well. I will update this post to reflect those.

Enjoy! Feel free to email or comment with more requests related to FE in general.

Fire Emblem Fates: Ike amiibo Event Dialogue Comparison (JPN vs ENG)

thethemercenaries

Back in August I translated Ike’s amiibo event in full. A few days ago, GameExplain released a video of all four “first encounter” dialogues in the English version of the game. I took a look at Lucina’s dialogue, and surprisingly, things changed! Then I looked at Robin’s, not as many differences, but a few.

So I decided to look into Ike today (and hopefully Marth tomorrow)to see if things changed in those.

Fire Emblem Fates: Robin amiibo Event Dialogue Comparison (JPN vs ENG)

Back in August I translated Robin’s amiibo event in full. A few days ago, GameExplain released a video of all four “first encounter” dialogues in the English version of the game. I took a look at Lucina’s dialogue, and surprisingly, things changed! So I decided to look into the others (Marth, Ike, and Robin) as well to see if things changed in those.

Fire Emblem Fates: Lucina amiibo Event Dialogue Comparison (JPN vs ENG)

lucinamiibo

Back in August I translated Lucina’s amiibo event in full. Yesterday, GameExplain released a video of all four “first encounter” dialogues in the English version of the game. I took a look at Lucina’s dialogue, and surprisingly, things changed! I am sure there are reasons for it, but the changes do go a long way of changing the subtle meanings of this brief dialogue.

Fire Emblem Fates: All four amiibo event dialogue translations -First Encounters-

These are all the first encounter conversations. On my previous posts for amiibo dialogue translations (now updated), I was missing these. Youtuber Linkmastr was kind enough to upload them specifically for me, so here they are with the full dialogue!

You can read the events on their individual pages (with videos), or just see them all on this page. Marth’s here, Robin’s here, Lucina’s here, and Ike’s here.

This was all done on my free time, and so took a while. It was certainly a lot of work, but I do hope you enjoy! I am unemployed… so please consider donating if you like the work I do. : )
