FE7 Blazing Blade Localization: Karel’s “Sword” – Physical Blade or a Technique? [JPN vs ENG]

Today’s post concerns a reader from reddit’s curiosity regarding Karel. To quote:

Could you possibly take a look at Karel and Karla’s supports to see if they are strictly referring to the art of the sword or if there actually is a physical sword passed down in their family? I argued once that their English supports establish there is a physical sword (which is not named in game and in particular is not the Wo Dao).

They mention the quote (in the screen shot above) which is the line in question. One would likely assume it is indeed a physical blade as opposed to any sort of “way of the sword” as a result. It may be worth noting that Karel holds a bloodied sword in his official artwork too that some assume may be said sword.

Upon researching it, it’s an interesting case that leans toward mistranslation, and that the sword is actually meant to be a style and not a physical blade. But let’s take a thorough look at the matter.

They shared a video with it that displays the mishap (shown below). It’s pretty amusing.

When it is mentioned in the epilogue that Micaiah ceded Talrega to Jill, does it mean full independence or autonomy? As far as I know, to cede means complete independence but maybe the Japanese script is more clear.

FE Heroes: Does Dorcas acknowledge the mutton meme in Japanese? [JPN vs ENG]

Fire Emblem Heroes featured an update that includes new characters such as Dorcas, Lute, and Mia. You may recall Dorcas being the most surprising of these three to place high on the Fire Emblem Heroes popularity poll (Choose Your Legends) that took place some months ago.

It had been attributed to a particular meme involving a US commercial for the game he appears in, Fire Emblem: Blazing Blade on Game Boy Advance (and seventh installment in the series, first to come to the US).

Fans noticed very quickly that he in fact references this commercial directly (twice!) in his English dialogue in Fire Emblem Heroes, and I received multiple requests to look into what he says in Japanese instead.

So let’s take a look!

Today, I look into a reader request who emailed me:

“I recall reading…. somewhere…. that they changed Garcia and Dozla’s support conversations to remove alcohol references.

If you have time, could you look at it?”

I have heard of this too, but never looked into it. It’s listed under trivia on Garcia’s page on the Fire Emblem wiki, for instance, though it lacks any citation.

So let’s fix that!
