Notes:

  • Gray was called a “nanpa” which is usually a negatively associated trait with flirtatious/playboy sorts. Since that may not really represent his official localization as much. I decided to go with secondary meanings to arrive at “carefree” (in relationships, tact, etc) which made enough sense, I think.
  • The part with the “pitchfork” was a little strange. In Japanese, the item is simply called “Villager’s Fork.” So, one can depict it as a tiny fork or a big pitchfork. However, the official localization called it a Pitchfork (and indeed, its sprite resembles a Pitchfork). While one could call a “pitchfork” a “fork” too –I’m sure the first image that comes to mind with “fork” is the regular eating utensil. One cannot say the same thing the other way around (“this pitchfork” when referring to the eating utensil).

Anyway, thankfully the rest of that panel is about Alm being passive aggressive with Clive’s love for status and such. So it was easy to work in both Villager’s Fork and Pitchfork without the need for sub note on the matter while also fueling that passive aggression! That’s a lucky coincidence that usually doesn’t happen.

Note:

The “Brand…ish” was an intense exercise in localization. If that comic feels a little forced, that is my fault. The original joke was based in Japanese. To understand it, the “daikon radish” is a Japanese radish (it appeared in Fates as ‘Daikon Radish,’ but not in this game, so I avoided using the word ‘daikon.’) The joke revolved around the fact Zeke could only remember that the person who would save Valentia had a “something kon.” In Japanese, the word they use for brand also contains “-kon.” He just couldn’t remember the first part of it. So Gray thinks on it and realizes he holds a daikon in his hands, and that he is the one. With this in mind, I had to think of a word that would lead from Brand to Radish. I decided the word “brandish” would be a nice way to get there, as Zeke’s memory being hazy could easily make him doubt whether it was brand, brandish (a word that heroes are often associated with too), and other words close to those. This leads to it perhaps being a rhyme or a word close to brandish, and so good old Gray gets to Radish! (It goes to show just how much thinking even a simple four panel comic can take…!) I’m sure there are better ways I could have gone about it, but I had to keep the deadline in mind too. Let me know if you all have more fun ways to go about it!

FE Echoes: SoV Localization: “Shut up, Tobin.” [JPN vs ENG]

This post is part of a series on reader requested (and personal curiosity) comparisons between Fire Emblem games’ Japanese and English scripts. Last time, I covered some dialogue Mae says during her recruitment. This time, I check out a scene with Tobin and Gray.

Today’s post has minor spoilers from part one of the game.

Two readers on twitter requested for me to check a line from Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia:

I think a lot of people would like to hear what Gray’s “shut up Tobin” was in Japanese too. It’s in Act 1, during the visit to the Deliverance Hideout where Clive reunited with Clair. Gray fanboys over him, Tobin questions why he’s revered if he’s losing the war and Gray just says “Shut up, Tobin.”

Please remember this is not a criticism of the localization, nor do I aim to purport which is necessarily better or that you should/must like better. Any comments I make along those lines are simply my personal opinion that you can feel free to disagree with as need be. : )

Now let’s get to it!
