FE Heroes: “A Day in the Life of the Heroes” (Page 27) Translation

Page 27 (5/22) “Boasting About the Retainers”

Note:

• So it’s vague as to who is saying the last speech bubble. Takumi up until then had pink bubbles. Thus, I assumed Leo to be safe, and so the translation becomes more akin to “That is how I feel/guess/etc.” But if it was Takumi, then the translation could be “I can sympathize,” which would be a fun joke that throws back to Hinata (Takumi’s own subordinate) being sacrificed as Fury fodder. I felt it’d be a better punchline, but I have to tread carefully as to not take too many creative liberties.
• After asking for audience opinion I decided to go with “I can sympathize” after all.

Page 21 (4/10) “Summoning”

Notes:

• Clearly this joke revolved around how Corrin from Fates shares his Japanese name with Kamui from Shadows of Valentia. There was no immediate way around it, so I reluctantly put in a translator’s note about the joke. I’ll be thinking of ways around it, and am open to suggestion. A challenge in localization!
• I chose to go with the word “pretty” for “ikemen” (which normally means “handsome”/”cool guy”) simply due to the last panel not really working with his love for Valbar who he would already deem to be fine the way he is. Handsome usually has a masculine connotation to it, and to a western audience, I would assume one would take Kamui to fit that bill more than Corrin. This leaves “pretty” with it’s “less masculine” connotation to be vague in terms of whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing. It also leaves it vague as to what he thought of Kamui before that. Yes, this much thinking goes into one little word… xD

Here is an alternate version with slightly changed dialogue at the start to make the joke work with no notes in English. It plays with Leon’s expectations rather than the names being confused.

Notes:

• Azama actually referred to Yama/Enma here (the king of the underworld who judges the dead, specifically the Buddhist version that is based on the Rigvedic deities and seen in Japanese mythology) but I figured “the demon king” was a good enough approximation without need for explanation. Though I was thinking of putting something more like “Hades” in there, it would be odd for a Hoshidan to say such (as that may fit “Nohr” more…), which is why I went with the more vague “demon king.”
• [UPDATE]: I’m seeing many people making a Ganondorf joke now though, I had forgotten he had this title too. xD Please know that it was an unintentional reference, and that I was not “forcing” any references in there!

Fire Emblem if/Fates: Gender-bend Fanart Translations

Today I fulfilled a reader’s request who wanted to see these few (nicely drawn!) genderbend pictures of the two royal families from Fire Emblem Fates.

It was a minor request (not too much text) so I was able to do it pretty quickly.

(I guess the guys are having a harder time adapting to the female character design in the game than the other way around? xD)
