FE9 Path of Radiance Localization: Mia’s Fortune and Archrival [JPN vs ENG]

It’s been awhile! Happy New Year! Hopefully I’ll have time for more posts in 2020.

Today’s post is a personal curiosity involving Mia’s fortune in her support conversation with Rhys, as well as her “archrival” in general. The structure is a little wayward, as a forewarning.

The localization of her conversation is mostly very accurate, though the fortune itself actually differs slightly. Despite a lot of small detours from the Japanese here and there, the conversation ultimately reaches the same conclusion.

I also touch upon a few other instances of her mention of fortunes and archrivals.

Pokemon Sword/Shield: Are Poke Kids Mia and Rhys’s names a nod to Fire Emblem?

While playing Pokemon Shield, I encountered two Poke Kids, a girl and a boy, on Route 4. They are in the same area in close proximity to each other in the northeast section of the route.

Their names? Mia and Rhys.

As an FE fan, that really stuck out, as we know these names as the pair of mercenaries from Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. Fun!

So naturally I wondered if this was an intentional reference, or total coincidence?

Short answer: If not a coincidence, then it may be a very light localization-side reference out of opportunity. There is no JP reference however.

FE Radiant Dawn: Mia x Rhys Comic Translation (1) (by sa_ayahara)

Today I translated a very brief (3 page) fan comic featuring Mia and Rhys from Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

This comic was originally drawn by artist @sa_ayahara who draws quite a lot of fan art involving the two.

So please keep in mind I did not draw these. I simply translated them. I asked for her direct permission to translate them, and she granted (and in fact encouraged) me to do so. She asks that her works not be reproduced elsewhere without her permission.

See her wonderful pixiv profile here. She does a lot of Tellius (FE9/10) art beyond just Mia and Rhys, too!

Toru Narihiro – Interview on Fire Emblem for Wii Translation – FE 25th Anniversary

The Making of Fire Emblem: 25 Years of Development History contains some fun trivia regarding the series. You can find all the information I translated thus far in one place here.

This post is about the never-released Fire Emblem Wii.  This is part of a lengthy interview with series veteran Toru Narihiro where he talks about the period of trial and error between Radiant Dawn and Shadow Dragon. I have been working on translating the greater interview, so this is just an excerpt from it regarding this specific section.

The Making of Fire Emblem: 25 Years of Development History contains some fun trivia regarding the series. You can find all the information I translated thus far in one place here.

This post is about the never-released Fire Emblem Wii. According to interviews within the book, it was in development after Radiant Dawn (FE10) but was canceled due to the project having no real aim. Below are some design documents from the book. I provide the translated image below, followed by some commentary, and finally the transcript below.
