Page 16 (3/06) “The Envious Half”

Notes:

  • Please see last week’s comic involving the “other half” joke first if this one doesn’t make much sense.
  • As the original comic played to the same wording, I tried to keep the innuendo consistent between the comics. While in this particular case Sharena may have been simply referring to the lower half (aka “butt end” or inferior half), to play to the last comic, I added the “bending” reference to add to how things may have been taken the wrong way. If you see a more literal translation, the joke may not come off as well (as indeed the last comic delved into what half Alfonse would be part of, and the punchline here is simply that Sharena automatically assumes the lower half. But this isolates it from the previous punchline that also involved the suggestive meanings of such).
  • The talk between Alfonse and Kiran was likely just referring to a battle and how much synergy they have with each other, referring to Robin’s quote in the previous comic too –so it makes sense that she being unaware of the context would lead to such a reaction too. As such, I had to write the dialogue in a way where it could’ve been taken the wrong way. I hope that came across well enough. Literally, it would read “Way to go, other half!” and “Hahaha you too, other half!” But you can see how that just reads rather awkwardly in the end.

Page 15 (2/27) “Half a Body, Half a Mind”

Notes:

  • The title to this comic in Japanese is: “半身半信半疑.” You can see the 半 character repeated over and over, it means half. So the title literally means Half Body, Half Belief, Half Doubt. The second part of this title basically pertains to indecision. Kiran can’t figure out what Robin meant, so “Half a Mind” was fitting while keeping to the “Half” theme.
  • The line regarding “consummate our bond” was “合体とかできるのかな・・・” in Japanese. (Lit: “I wonder if we can we join our bodies?”) The word 合体 pops up with its double meaning of literally joining bodies (fusing together as seen), but also “copulate.” It is used as a pun in other media too (immediate example being a certain episode of the anime Lucky Star that used the word as its punchline). So to make Kiran express the equally vague pun I wrote it out as I did for Alfonse to potentially take it the wrong way (even if Kiran meant it literally) –but at the same time keep it as vague and child friendly as it was before…or so I hope.

Fire Emblem Fates: Marth amiibo Event Dialogue Comparison (JPN vs ENG)

marthamiiboeve

Back in August I translated Marth’s amiibo event in full. A few days ago, GameExplain released a video of all four “first encounter” dialogues in the English version of the game. I took a look at Lucina’s dialogue, and surprisingly, things changed! Then I looked at Robin’s, not as many differences, but a few. Yesterday, I looked at Ike, who only had a few small changes (and an error).

So! Today is the last of the four, being Marth. He changed quite a bit, from informal to formal among other things!

This is by no means a “they changed everything so don’t buy this game” post! This is just to show how things can sometimes change through localization and is a way to satiate curiosity.

Note, this is just the first encounter for now. If I find videos, or when the game comes out, I will be able to compare second encounters as well. I will update this post to reflect those.

Enjoy! Feel free to email or comment with more requests related to FE in general.
