FE Heroes: Sakura’s Kitty Paddle? [JPN vs ENG]

Today is a quick post from a reader question regarding Sakura’s “Kitty Paddle” and what it is in Japanese.

So I took a  look:

猫の暗器
Cat’s Anki*

You will notice I didn’t translate “anki” as there is no real descriptor for it. Most literally, it means “hidden weapon” (or dark weapon, or illusive, etc).

According to the Japanese wikipedia, “anki” is described as:

暗器（あんき）は、中国武術における身体に隠し持つ事が出来る小さな武器の総称

“A generic name for small arms/equipment that could be concealed under clothing used in Chinese martial arts.”

It goes on to mention this moniker of weapons was adapted by Japan by the end of the 20th century thanks to the term’s popularity in film/manga/etc. It’s been a semi-recent way to define a category that previously did not have a definition in Japanese.

Notes:

• Artisans (in Japanese) was written as　匠　（ たくみ, or takumi). Yes, like the character of the same name. Though it may be coincidence as he is not featured in the comic. The word means “skill/craft” etc.

Notes:

• Azama actually referred to Yama/Enma here (the king of the underworld who judges the dead, specifically the Buddhist version that is based on the Rigvedic deities and seen in Japanese mythology) but I figured “the demon king” was a good enough approximation without need for explanation. Though I was thinking of putting something more like “Hades” in there, it would be odd for a Hoshidan to say such (as that may fit “Nohr” more…), which is why I went with the more vague “demon king.”
• [UPDATE]: I’m seeing many people making a Ganondorf joke now though, I had forgotten he had this title too. xD Please know that it was an unintentional reference, and that I was not “forcing” any references in there!

Today I fulfilled a reader’s request who wanted to see these few (nicely drawn!) genderbend pictures of the two royal families from Fire Emblem Fates.

It was a minor request (not too much text) so I was able to do it pretty quickly.

(I guess the guys are having a harder time adapting to the female character design in the game than the other way around? xD)

Notes:

• The right comic surprisingly did not make too much use of the “sakura” pun. For those unaware, sakura is the Japanese word for the Cherry Blossoms. The panel just featured them looking at the Sakura (specifically the petals), and then seeing Sakura (the character) there too who had a similar effect. But since it was not too heavily emphasized (and simply a this emphasis rather than a sakura emphasis), it carried over in the translation very nicely with very little lost.
