Super Mario Odyssey: Scientist Outfit Description [JPN vs ENG]

Today’s post is another smaller one and looks into the Scientist Outfit in Super Mario Odyssey. It’s part of an ongoing series of comparison from the game both by request and personal curiosity.

A lot of patterns are repeated from previous posts, so I recommend reading them or else my commentary may seem a little short (as I’m avoiding repeating myself every post).

Japanese Lit. Translation Official Localization
サイエテイスト風の 変わった帽子

サイエンテスト風 白衣のラフな装い

A peculiar hat with the air of a scientist.

The white coat that makes a scientist.

A strange piece of head wear that gives off a science-y vibe.

It’s a scientific fact that nothing says “scientist” like a lab coat.

Like previous posts have shown, localization through this game ups the straightforward Japanese description with colorful flair.

The Japanese here you can actually see has the same initial line for both, which means “with the air of a scientist.” (Or, for lack of better words, “scientist-y”). The localization picks up on this. The first one uses “science-y” vibe which fits that description well.

Then, like they did previously on some other outfits, the localization avoids redundancy by not wanting to use the same line again. So they opt to go with the sillier “scientific fact” line instead.

That’s really all there is to say on this one!

That’s that!

I will continue to look at fun differences between the versions of sorts of games when I get time!
